Disadvantages of Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy is the last option for eliminating debts and the calls and visits of creditors.

There are a number of advantages to filing a bankruptcy petition but at the same time there are a number of disadvantages. For example, bankruptcy damages the credit history of the individual as well as the social status. Once the process of bankruptcy starts, the creditor calls and visits stop automatically. However, the available credit options for the individual are reduced.

Immediate Disadvantages of Bankruptcy

Filing for bankruptcy causes immediate problems for the debtor. The property of the individual is liquidated and cash is taken away. In this situation, it is nearly impossible to finance immediate needs.

The traditional options of obtaining financial assistance are not readily available in a bankruptcy. Although non-traditional options are available, higher interest rates are charged. Individuals are also not considered for any kind of credit cards except secured credit cards. Job prospects may also be bleak for a person with a bankruptcy on their record.

Effects of Bankruptcy on a Business

If the bankruptcy petitioner has a business, it will be affected by the bankruptcy. The credit availability will be reduced and this may cause severe problems for business capital. The creditors as well as the suppliers of the business may be affected. Employees of the business may become jobless which will create negative repercussions for their families.
