Business Schools in China

Located in East Asia, China is a sovereign country with rich cultural heritage and a remarkable history. China is a centrally planned economy with a central government , but the economic reform introduced in 1978 made it a market based economy which resulted in the explosive growth of the economy and business activities. This growth generated a huge demand for managers and leaders to run this economy and the higher education showed a tremendous growth to provide for the supply of the business talents.

China has the largest population in the world, the population largely contributes to a strong growth in the consumer market sector. China has a very strong and vibrant culture and rich in heritage so international students will be exposed to a very nice environment to study, gain insight into an emerging market and understand the complexity in business processes in China.

The fast growing china economy has a huge demand for corporate managers and leaders who can take the corporates to next level in global landscape. So business schools need to fulfill this demand. China economy need to shift from a production based economy to knowledge based economy if it has to continue its growth. Business schools need to transform the mindset to move from low cost productions to long term investment and innovation to drive the economy.

In the past many Chinese students used to go to study in European business schools , Now the situation is a mixed one with many European business schools who have their campuses in China and have partnership with local universities to serve the local market. Also many of the Chinese students still go to other countries to pursue the education. International students come to study in China and Hong Kong as these are very much affordable destinations to pursue business education so the number of international students studying in china also increased. Many of the international students come to study in Hong Kong rather than the mainland China based business schools as the Hong kong has a strong educational support towards china market. Hong kong is more connected to mainland China and it is a financial center in Asia. Hong kong also act as a strategic location to enter the china market and for Chinese companies to go global.

Slower economic growth has not affected the business education in China. For the sustained growth of the economy , China needs Entrepreneurs who are equipped with the leadership and Entrepreneurial skills to drive research and innovation for product and services. Business schools need to have more robust strategies and local partnerships and collaboration to drive the spirit of research and innovation to move the economy.

Chinese companies are growing very rapidly , so there is a huge demand for trained managers and many companies send their executives for training programs. Chinese companies now have a global perspective so need managers who are well rounded personality and manage diverse groups. Many of the Executive programs are filled by corporate executives who want to learn management skills so that they can take the corporate to international level. With the economic growth the companies must develop rapidly or meet fierce competition from the market. So the Executive MBA programs have been very successful in China. Chinese managers now face the problem of improving their managerial capabilities and Administrative powers to lead the corporate.

Higher educations reform resulted in the recognition of the need for management education. China needs to develop the intellectual power to maintain the economic power in the next century. Business Schools in China are growing rapidly due to the government spending and corporate and private companies collaboration that focus heavily on research , innovation and higher educational skill development. Students and research fellows are provided with much funding and support to develop something novel and international students are welcomed to study.

The Universities provide MBA programs, Executive MBA, Doctoral programs and many of the specialized professional skill development program. There are various courses also available as per the requirements.

Getting into one of the top business schools in china is very difficult as they have lesser class size while a large pool of students apply for these courses ,competition is fierce. Students need to have very good GMAT score along with a balanced personality for the program. Quality of Chinese students have improved over the years along with their English Proficiency. The huge population provides the backbone for such huge number of intellectual calibre.

The Tuition Fees and the cost of living is less compared to many developed countries but vary widely from place to place and from program to programs. The cost of living is not very high but may vary from city to city. International students are required to take student visa , health insurance before joining the program.

The job and salary conditions are also good for the students graduating from top business schools as corporates except them of higher standards and are valuable to corporates. These students get very much competitive salary and faster growth with less investment.

Chinese business schools need to have higher coverage to attract more number of students graduating from the college as well as they need to improve the faculty base for research and education. There is a need for growing collaboration between corporates, business schools and government to develop framework for managerial development. Chinese business schools also lack the diversity in the student base which is a basic requirement for the international network building. There is also a lack of support network for the research facilities in the business schools. Also there is a need to monitor the quality of management education as with the explosive growth of business schools some of the quality issues may be neglected. Business schools now need to focus on experimental teaching involving regular visits to innovation parks and corporates. Students need to focus on the practical implementation of subject knowledge so that they can gain insight from this.

MBA education is mainly taught by a combination of foreign professors and local professors. Many of the professors got their PhD in Western business schools. There is a need to improve the number of foreign professors in China so that the skill shortage can be tackled and the professors can make necessary changes to business education.
