The Dow Jones Index was created as a result of collaboration between Dow Jones & Company founder, Charles Dow and the editor of Wall Street Journal. The Dow Jones & Company produces and develops indexes that are accurate and useful. The statistical analysis of these indices is of the highest quality and is methodically arranged.
The Dow Jones Indexes provide index development, maintenance, distribution and licensing. This index is a family of ten thousand indexes and it is used in fifty eight countries. Among all of them, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is the best known index.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average indicates the performance of the companies that are listed in the index. This index has thirty major companies listed in it. This index also goes by the names of Dow 30 and DJIA. It is the oldest among the continuing stock market indexes of America. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was published for the first time on 26th May, 1896.

The companies listed in the DJIA are very well known and a lot of investors invest in the shares of these companies. For the selection of their components, the Dow Jones Indices use an entirely objective procedure. The only exception is the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The components of this index are chosen by the Wall Street Journal. The stocks of this index are not traditionally defined unlike the Dow Jones Utility Average and the Dow Jones Transportation Average.
