Deseret First Credit Union (DFCU) is a member-owned financial cooperative serving individuals affiliated with the Church of Latter-Day Saints in the Salt Lake City, Utah metropolitan area.
History:
Founded in 1955 by a few members of the Mormon Church to provide worshippers with an alternative to the corporate banking system, DFCU has grown steadily over the years despite maintaining an uncharacteristically closed stance when it comes to membership. (Generally speaking, only LDS followers or employees of the church are able to join.)
From a single, part-time branch when the organization began, it has turned into a 12-location, full-service financial institution with over 150 employees serving greater Salt Lake City.
Products and Services:
The following products and services are being offered by the credit union:
Free and Interest-bearing Checking
Savings and Money Market Accounts
Home, Auto, and Personal Loans
Online Banking
Investments and Financial Planning
Home and Auto Insurance
Credit Cards
Business Lending Services
Organizational Structure:
As with all credit unions, DFCU is headed by volunteers that sit on the Board of Directors. Elected by the member-owners, they are tasked with working to ensure the institution remains financially stable in conjunction with executive leaders that manage daily operations. Thanks to its focus on the needs of its accountholders instead of turning a profit, DFCU now has more than 53,000 people taking advantage of the credit union philosophy. This has led to the growth of an asset portfolio above $426 million, a remarkable sum for an organization with stricter eligibility requirements than most.
