Filling up an income tax form is a prerequisite for income tax payment. A yearly tax return needs to be filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which shows that the taxpayer has paid his taxes. Four categories of people fill up income tax forms in America.

The forms can be obtained from post office or local library. They can also be downloaded from the Internet.

Form 1040 – for resident aliens
Form 1040 NR – for nonresident aliens
Form 8843 – for exempts
Form 1099 – for self-employed, for those having income from dividends and investments, for those receiving rental income and royalties
Form 1041- income tax for trusts and estates
Form 1065- partnership income
Form 1120- corporate income tax returns
Information required for filling income tax forms are as follows:
Social security number
The employer sends the W- 2 form to the employee. This form offers an estimate of the income earned by the employee and the amount of tax deducted from the pay in the year gone by. While filing tax returns, the taxpayer has to send an original copy of this form. A copy of the various forms must also be kept by the taxpayer himself, which serves as a proof for clearing tax payments in case there is an audit.
After filling up the tax forms, they can either be mailed or in case the person is a resident alien, he can file the taxes online on the IRS site framed for this purpose. But in order to follow the second procedure, one has to get a PIN number; the procedure for this is available on the website itself. The IRS has designated softwares and e-file companies for this purpose.

The toll free number is 1-800-829-1040 and it is open from 7 a.m. To 10 p.m. EST. however, the local branch offices of IRS or professional tax preparation specialists can be contacted as well. A print out of the hard copy of the form needs to be kept with the taxpayer in case he is filing online.
